Understand that "Ripping" a DVD movie is not the same as "Copying" a DVD movie. Copying a DVD movie is a three step process in which an original DVD movie is copied blank DVD media. Ripping, on the other hand, is a one step process where a DVD’s raw data (the audio and video component) is extracted from the DVD and placed on your hard drive. Once a DVD has been ripped, there are several things you can do with it. You can:
- View the movie from the ripped raw data using special DVD software players.
- Convert the raw data into smaller compressed movie files such as AVI, MPEG, DivX, MOV, or XVID for archiving purposes and/or to view them with special software players such as Quicktime, Divx Player, or Windows Media Player. These types of conversions help conserve hard disc space as ripped DVD raw data files are quite large.
- Convert the ripped raw data into a format that can be burned onto a blank DVD or CD.
- DVD Decrypter
- Windows Media Player Classic
If you want to copy a DVD movie to and blank DVD, this is certainly possible using free programs but the process is quite time consuming and you have no guarantee that your copy will work. You are much better off purchasing a professional DVD copy program.
